Some of the best ideas we've had were born several cans of sauce deep at some random bar in some random town or country. The Skatepark of Tampa Party Team was dreamed up over a lot of laughs and silly antics I think somewhere in Europe a couple years ago. Anyway, the Damn Am Awards idea kicked off the same way. After we woke up the next day, we asked some of our industry friends at The Skateboard Mag and Nike SB to join us and now it's on: January 22 at ASR. It's nothing super formal, just some recognition for everyone who's been along for the ride with us all year at all these Damn Am stops. We made up all kinds of silly awards like "Started Smoking Award" and "Needs Intervention Award." One of them is the Skatepark of Tampa.com's Reader's Choice Award. Cast your vote here:

For tomorrow's Canadian Damn Am Street Qualifiers, there are 11 jams. You get one intro run and followed by an 8 minute jam with four skaters. Your run is 25% of your score and the jam is 75% of your score. There are five judges. The high and low scores are dropped and the remaining three are averaged to get your final score. We have been slowly working on turning the Damn Am events into more of a series that leads up to the end of the year at Tampa Am. Step one was moving Tampa Am to December. Step two is the SPoTlight Am of the Year Awards. SPoTlight Am of the Year awards will take place at ASR in January 2009. It will be based on 2008 Damn Am events and Tampa Am in December. At this year's Damn Am at Minneapolis, the number of entries is now limited to 80 instead of 100 (which ended up actually being 112 last year). We feel that the quality of skating and judging is at a higher level with fewer skaters. Due to this large decrease in spots, there is almost no room for shop/flow riders that got in with video footage in the past. Normally, only legitimate skate companies can put riders into a Damn Am event, not local companies or shop sponsors. Individuals cannot sign up directly, but we'll still be happy to check out your footage to see if we can make something happen. Email Rob @ DamnAm.com with questions.

We normally take 16 for the cut each day, but since so many more people skated today’s qualifier heats than yesterday, we broke it down to percentages to make it fair for the cut. When we took the top 16 yesterday out of 80 skaters, that was 20% that made the cut. The same 20% of the 103 that skated today make the cut – 22 people. For many of you, it will be the place where you first meet your friends that you will have for a lifetime. It's also the place where you meet back up with your friends where it seems like you haven't seen them in a lifetime. Individuals are not allowed to register for this contest directly. It must be your team manager from a legitimate skateboard company that gets you in. It looked like Chaz Pineda was going to take first in the Damn Am Vert Bowl Finals, but Alex Perelson pulled a 540 in his run among other things to take first in the Vert Finals. Chaz was hurt but was killing it all weekend. Photos and video will be posted whenever I'm not this busy.

The rest of the results from today's qualifier heats are right here. 2nd through 16th place go to the Semi-Finals on Sunday. We're off to the Toy Machine Good And Evil Premire now. Our entire crew is now here in Minneapolis. We spent last night at Mark Muller's house for a few beers, good food, a jock out hockey fest because Tampa's in the game, fun with animals, and some serious chess games.
